Upcoming News!

Hello!

I wanted to give you all a heads up on a few things that are happening in the classroom the next couple days.

-In Math (as you may know from the packet that came home) we just started Unit 3.  This unit is all about measurement.  We are just finishing lesson 18 and with that comes a mid-unit test.  You will see a review coming home Thursday for that.

-In writing we are making "lab report" books and learning about how scientists write.  Ask about the experiments your child is doing and what they are learning about force and motion. :)

...and finally, in Reading we have some very exciting events coming up!  The kids don't know this quite yet and we are keeping it a surprise until Friday.  We are going to be doing a March Madness "Book Tournament."  Throughout the month, kids will be reading the books that are in the tournament and voting on which ones they liked better.  They will also be filling out a bracket and they have a chance to see if they predicted the most books correctly and the 2nd grade favorite book or winner of the bracket at the end of the month.  Here is how it works:

-Everyone will fill out a "prediction" bracket

-Everyone will get a packet that shows the books that "play" against each other (the book with the most 2nd grade votes moves on to the next round)

-When the voting begins - students can only vote if they have read both books that are playing against each other (and have written a brief summary about the book in their packet)

Below are the titles of the books in the tournament and they are listed against the book that are playing against in the first round.  This may be important for you to know because although we have each of these books in the classroom, some of them we only have one copy of and will have to share.  Some kids may want to read some of these books on their own from the library or if you have access to them.

Next Week!!!

Happy Weekend!!!

I hope that everyone had a great break from school and enjoyed the holidays!  Just a few updates for here at school:

Next week in writing we are starting opinion writing.  Our first opinion piece will be about one of our favorite books and include a lot of details about why they like it, character traits and other information.  In order to write a detailed and persuasive opinion piece, students will be using the book as a reference.  Some kids mentioned that they want to write about a book that they have at home, so if they could bring them to school on Monday that would be great!

Next week the testing window for the iReady assessment on the computers opens up.  Your child will be taking a math test on the computers on Tuesday morning and a reading test on Wednesday afternoon.

Have a great weekend!!!

Halloween and Newsletter

It is almost Halloween!!!  I don't know how we are this far into the school year, but next Tuesday, October 31st is the WES Halloween parade!  For those of you that are new to Windsor, your child will be able to wear their costume to school on Tuesday and right away in the morning they will be walking in the Windsor parade. :) Please send your child with a change of clothes for after.  Parents are welcome and encouraged to come and see your child walk with their classmates.  After the parade you are welcome to come and take pictures in our classroom.  As of right now, the parade will be taking place outside the school (but we are told that it may change if the weather is bad).

I also have some students that have come up with a classroom newsletter of information that they think parents might want to know each week.  They did a great job of coming up with some important stuff for next week and writing an awesome small summary of our learning from this short week.

Here is the "newspaper" that they came up with for you:

We have worked hard on wrapping up the first units of writing (personal narratives/real stories) and reading (working on various strategies that 2nd graders use to read accurately, fluently and remember what they read).  In reading, we sorted out all of the strategies that we learned so far into what they really help us do.  Also, there are a few kids that will still be sharing their personal narratives with the class next week, but most kids have been bringing all of their narrative stories home this week in a bright yellow "folder" - so watch for that coming.  They have worked very hard on their published pieces!

One more quick thing: in math next week we are finishing up the first unit which was mostly about completing story problems and ways to add and subtract numbers.  We will be taking time next week to review and prepare for our "end of the unit" math test that we will be taking towards the end of the week.

Have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see you on Tuesday for the parade!!! :)
